Backgrounds for the opening sequence were meant to be loose, atmospheric, and dreary to emphasize Tabitha’s struggle to wear down the iron shoes and to contrast with the vibrant crisp colors of the glass hill.
Like in the rest of the film, shapes and decorative patterns were inspired by Norwegian folk painting.
